Whether to use ear cartilage or rib cartilage depends on the surgeon’s rhinoplasty technique and the patient’s preferences. However, ear cartilage is usually limited in quantity and is typically only used to wrap the nasal tip. Other materials are often needed to construct the nasal framework, septum, and bridge.
Rib cartilage offers greater advantages, as it can be used for both the nasal tip and bridge. It is especially suitable for patients who want a natural-looking nose with a low risk of complications or rejection. Since rib cartilage is autologous, it has a high compatibility with the body.
(For patients who have had breast augmentation, the rib cartilage is usually harvested from the 7th rib. For those without prior breast surgery, the 5th or 6th rib is typically used.)
